When revenue swings from year to year
One strong year, then a shortfall. A grant ends or an event comes in short, and the budget scrambles to catch up. Revenue that leans on a few sources, planned one appeal at a time, will always feel unpredictable.
A fundraising plan starts with an honest look at the numbers:
- How much of your revenue comes from each source, and how has that mix shifted?
- Which sources have room to grow?
- What does your revenue goal ask of your staff and board?
- Where in the year does each appeal, grant deadline and event fall?
The answers become a nonprofit fundraising plan your whole team can follow, with revenue you can plan around.
When donor relationships depend on who has time
Strong donor relationships are built on purpose. Someone checks in, shares a story that matters to that person and recognizes when the moment is right to ask.
In most organizations, outreach happens when someone finds an open afternoon. A promising donor gets a call in the spring, then hears from you again only at the year-end appeal.
We look at how your team nurtures relationships across the year: who reaches out to whom, and how often each supporter hears from you along the way. Behind every strong relationship is a steady rhythm your team can follow.
With that rhythm in place, relationships deepen on a schedule your team can keep, and each one moves toward a first or larger gift.
When donors give once and drift away
Keeping a donor costs far less than finding a new one, yet the second gift is often the hardest to get.
Donors want to know their gift mattered. A late thank-you, or an update that arrives only with the next ask, tells them a different story.
Our questions here get specific:
- What is your donor retention rate, and how does it compare for first-time and repeat donors?
- How quickly does each donor hear from you after giving?
- What do supporters hear between asks?
- Which donor groups have lapsed in the past two years?
Strong donor stewardship turns a first gift into a lasting relationship.
When your board wants to help but needs a role
Ask a board member to make a fundraising call and watch the room go quiet. Most care deeply about the mission. What they need is a role that fits them.
We talk with board members about what they're comfortable doing and what they've been asked to do so far, then connect their strengths to your fundraising plan. For one member that means opening doors. For another, it's a thank-you call to a longtime donor.
Board fundraising becomes something members do with confidence, and your executive director gains real partners in the work.
Questions about fundraising support
-
Our fees follow the scope of the work. Defined projects, like a fundraising plan or a board training, are priced as one project fee. Ongoing support, like campaign management and leadership coaching, runs as a monthly retainer. You can hire us for one service or several. After our first conversation, we send a proposal with the scope, timeline and price in writing.
-
Yes. Many clients continue on a monthly retainer after a planning project. A typical month includes a planning session with your executive director, campaign management, major gift prospecting and coaching for your team.
-
We work on a flat project fee or a monthly retainer, agreed on before the work begins. That follows the Association of Fundraising Professionals Code of Ethics, which calls for fees set independently of the amount raised. It also keeps the focus on long-term donor relationships, and every gift goes fully to your mission.
-
Many organizations use both, at different stages. A consultant brings senior strategy and builds the plan, systems and training your team needs. A development director carries the day-to-day work of raising money. If you’re preparing to hire, we can put the plan and systems in place first, so your new hire steps into a clear role. Teams with development staff already in place bring us in to work alongside them.
-
Your executive director, staff and board make the asks. Donors give to people they know and trust inside your organization, so those relationships belong with your team. We prepare you for each conversation, from deciding who to approach to practicing the ask itself.
-
Yes. We work with nonprofits across the country. Most planning sessions, coaching and trainings run smoothly over video, and we travel to you for in-person workshops when your team would benefit from time in the same room.
-
Yes. Foundation and corporate strategy is part of fundraising planning. We can build your grant pipeline, write applications and letters of inquiry, and track every deadline so each one goes out on time.
